Disney’s Hollywood Studios (formerly MGM Studios) was the third theme park built at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando Florida. The park was opened on May 1, 1989. Originally the park also acted as an operating production studio.
Hollywood Studios is currently the only Walt Disney World Theme Park that has a roller coaster that goes upside down. Hollywood Studios is also home to many shows.
Hollywood Studios for a while was going down hill. But with the recent additions of Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge. Things are looking up.
Here is everything great about Hollywood Studios.
RIDES
Some of the best rides in Walt Disney World can be found at Hollywood Studios. From light thrills to extreme thrills, Hollywood Studios have them all.
Rock n’ Roller Coaster is the only roller coaster in Disney World that goes upside down. This is a launch coaster that shoots you off at 57 mph and takes you for a wild ride to get to the show.
I really like the soundtrack playing in the cars. While Aerosmith may not be as big as they were in the late 90’s early 2000’s they are a classic band.
Slinky Dog Dash is the most recent roller coaster to come to Walt Disney World and this ride does not disappoint. Flying around on Slinky in the back of Andy’s yard is a great time. This is a great first coaster for kids.
This is the second hardest FastPass to get after Animal Kingdom‘s Flight of Passage. Once you ride it you will understand. Slinky Dog Dash is a much more enjoyable ride than Seven Dwarfs Mine Train over at Magic Kingdom.
No visit to Orlando is complete with out a visit to the Hollywood Tower Hotel. You can see the hotel all the way over in EPCOT if you are standing in the right place. It’s not surprising when you consider this building is 199 feet tall.
“One stormy night long ago, five people stepped through the door of an elevator and into a nightmare. That door is opening once again, and this time, it’s opening for you“
Will you be able to escape the Fifth Dimension and make it back to ride another day?
Smuggler’s Run is the newest ride to come to Hollywood Studios. In December of 2019 Rise of the Resistance will open and some are saying will be the best ride in all of Florida.
Take control of the Millennium Falcon in this interaction simulator ride where you get to take control. This has been a dream of many kids for years and now it is a reality. Who didn’t want to fly the Millennium Falcon as a kid? I know I did.
FOOD
The food at Hollywood Studios can really depend on the person. I can agree with most people when they say that the quick service selections in the park are really lacking. As for table service….. they have some excellent locations. Click here for our rankings on Hollywood Studios Quick Service Locations.
Hollywood Brown Derby is considered by many to be one of the top 5 restaurants in all of Walt Disney World. I haven’t eaten here recently but it was very good when I had it a couple years ago. To me it is not worth 2 table service credits but than again I can’t think of one restaurant at WDW that is.

Like I said before the table service locations at Hollywood Studios are excellent and unique. 50’s Prime Time Cafe has some of the best comfort food at any Disney theme park or resort. Just don’t get caught with your elbows on the table. You know your Aunt doesn’t like that.
Another great place to check out that might remind you of the good old days is Sci Fi Dine In. While this place may be a little scary for younger children it is a really fun and unique atmosphere you can’t find anywhere else. Eat your meal in booths designed to look like cars while watch 50’s era movies at the “drive in”.
If you are over 21 try the Orbiting Oreos Specialty Cocktail. It is amazing. So tasty I ending up ordering two. Just note that it is pretty dark inside.
For a tasty snack head over to Epic Eats. This is one of the best uses for a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plans outside of Food and Wine or Flower and Garden. This funnel cake is amazing. Just watch out it’s a little messy.

LANDS
The recent additions of both Toy Story land and Galaxy’s Edge has shown Disney hasn’t last their edge when designing interaction lands. Both areas are made with such attention to detail that it is easy to see why all of the WDW theme parks rank in the top 10 for most visited theme parks.

A visit to Black Spire Outpost on Batuu makes you feel like you are in the movies. I am sure in Disneyland it is a much more comfortable planet than the one in Hollywood Studios were it is set in a hot, humid planet. But hey that’s Florida.
If you ever dreamed of drinking some Blue Milk or flying the Millennium Falcon. Your dreams can now come true. Just decide if you are going to join the Resistance or the First Order.

In Toy Story Land everything is oversized. That’s because you are supposed to be the size of a toy. It’s pretty neat when you think about it. Walking about all the blocks most of us played with as a kid is pretty cool.
I really enjoy walking about this land. Plus at night it gives it a completely different feel. You really need to come both during the day and at night.
Hollywood Studios use to be a half day park for me. But with the new additions of Galaxy’s Edge and Toy Story Land it is now a full day park. This theme park has the best ratio of Amazing rides to just good rides. The only ride I would consider a take it or leave it would be Alien Swirling Saucers but I still really enjoy that ride.
