Why Chops Grille Is the One Specialty Restaurant Worth Booking on Every Royal Caribbean Cruise

Picture this: it’s night three of your cruise, you’ve hit the buffet twice already, and the main dining room menu — while perfectly good — is starting to feel a little too familiar. Somewhere on the ship, a specialty restaurant is calling your name, but there’s that nagging voice asking if it’s really worth the extra charge. I’ve stood in that exact spot more times than I can count, and I can tell you with total confidence: when that restaurant is Chops Grille, the answer is always yes.

I’ve eaten at Chops on four different ships — Allure of the Seas (both lunch and dinner, solo and with a full group of friends), Utopia of the Seas for Dinner, Oasis of the Seas for dinner, and Independence of the Seas for lunch — and it has never once let me down. There’s something about the low hum of conversation, the sizzle of a steak hitting the plate at the next table, and a server who treats you like a regular even if it’s your first time aboard, that makes Chops feel less like a cruise ship add-on and more like a genuine night out. If you’ve been on the fence about booking it, consider this your sign.

Start Strong

Before you even get to order anything, there’s the bread. A basket of warm rolls and soft butter shows up almost the second you sit down, and it is a trap in the best possible way. It is genuinely some of the best bread on the ship — which is a problem, because if you’re not careful, you’ll be three rolls deep and suspiciously full before your appetizer even hits the table. Pace yourself. You didn’t book a specialty restaurant to fill up on complimentary carbs, tempting as they are.

Once you’ve (hopefully) shown some restraint, the Colossal Shrimp Cocktail is not a marketing exaggeration — these shrimp actually live up to the name, and it’s become a near-automatic order for me. The Charred Beef Carpaccio is another standout if you want something a little more adventurous than the classic Caesar Salad, which is reliably solid but admittedly the safest choice on the menu..

The Main Event

This is where Chops earns its reputation. My go-to is the 9 oz filet, cooked exactly the way I ask for it every single time — no small feat when you’re serving hundreds of guests a night. When I’m in the mood for something bigger, the bone-in ribeye doesn’t disappoint either. Both pair beautifully with the peppercorn sauce if you want something bold, or the Bordelaise if you’re after something richer and more classic. If you’re willing to branch out from steak entirely, the Spicy Jumbo Shrimp is worth trying — it comes with real heat, so go in expecting some spice, but it’s genuinely delicious.

The Sides Nobody Talks About Enough

Steakhouse sides can be an afterthought, but Chops treats them like they matter. The asparagus, tater tots, mashed potatoes, french fries, and mac & cheese have all been consistently good across every visit — no filler, no weak links. If you’re dining with a group, ordering a few different sides to share is the move.

The Honest Part: Dessert

I’ll be candid — dessert is the one area where Chops doesn’t quite match the rest of the meal. The New York cheesecake and warm chocolate cake are both perfectly fine, but “fine” is the operative word after a meal this good. If you’re tight on time or stomach space, I wouldn’t feel bad skipping dessert here in favor of grabbing something elsewhere on the ship.

Service That Actually Matches the Price Tag

Across every ship and every visit — solo, in a group, lunch or dinner — the service at Chops has been consistently top-notch. That consistency matters more than people give it credit for; it’s easy for a specialty restaurant to feel inconsistent from ship to ship, but Chops has managed to nail it every time for me.

The Verdict

If you’re looking to break up your nights in the main dining room or buffet, Chops Grille is a must. It’s well worth the price, and honestly one of the few specialty restaurants I’d recommend booking on almost any Royal Caribbean sailing without hesitation. Go for the filet, don’t skip the shrimp cocktail, and just know going in that dessert isn’t where the magic happens.
