Truly Haunted Locations in Pennsylvania

It’s that time of year when everyone wants to get a little spooked. From walking through a haunted house to taking a nice hayride through spooky woods. The Halloween season is one of the best times of year. 

While many places you visit throughout the month of October are filled with actors and scary props. There are many places throughout Pennsylvania that are truly haunted. From one of the most Haunted locations in America to some legends only known by locals. We are going to take a look at some of the supposedly haunted places throughout the great state of Pennsylvania. Below you will find some truly haunted locations in Pennsylvania.

Don’t worry the ghost don’t only come out in October. Anytime of the year you can visit these locations throughout the Keystone state for a little spooky fun. Some places even offer year round ghost tours. Like the visit place on our list.

Gettysburg

You can’t go anywhere in Gettysburg without some type of ghost story being associated with that location. From the many field hospitals to the battlefield so many ghost and spooky stories. People have claimed to hear cannon fire, gun shots, and even the screams of wounded men. 

Ghosts have been sighted all around Gettysburg. It doesn’t just have to be in early July when the battle happened. Every month and every hour of the day you can find claims of ghost sightings. 

Gettysburg is known to be one of the most haunted places in the world. That Civil War soldier you are talking to just might not be a reenactor. They might be there one second and gone the next. 

You best bet on seeing a ghost is at Devil’s Den. Just the name screams spooky. People of all ages have claimed to see both Union and Confederate soldiers roaming the site. Will you be added to that list?

If you want to sleep with a ghost there is no better place to try than the Gettysburg Hotel. The Gettysburg Hotel has been around since 1797 and is a short distance to the historic battlefield. The hotel is reportedly haunted by the spirits of James Culbertson’s a Union Soldier who roams the hotel and a women has been seen dancing in the ballroom.

Cathedral of Learning

The Cathedral of Learning is Located at the University of Pittsburgh. This Landmark is listed with the National Register of Historic Places and is the Second tallest educational building in the world. Of course, that’s not why it is on this list.

There have been reports of some spooky and unexplained things happening. From chairs moving to cold spots. There have even been reports of candles lighting on their own. If you happen to go to school at the University of Pittsburgh check it out and let us know if you witness any of these. 

Just try to do your studying first? We don’t want you getting bad grades because you decided to hunt some ghost instead.

Cry Baby Bridge

Pretty much every state has a cry baby bridge legend. They all have one thing in common…. An old covered bridge. One thing Pennsylvania is not lacking is old covered bridges. There are close to 200 covered bridges throughout the state.  

All you need to do is go to one of the many after dark, you are better off if it’s around midnight and sit and listen. You may just hear a baby crying. If you take a dirty car to some of these locations. You may just notice a hand print on the back of your window when you leave.

Eastern State Penitentiary

Located in Philadelphia, Eastern State Penitentiary is one of the more haunted locations in Eastern PA. This prison first opened in 1829 and held inmates up until 1971. Some of the most famous prisoners called these walls home including Al Capone. 

Most prisons are thought to be haunted. Inmates take their lives within prison walls all the time. Eastern State Penitentiary was no different. Today you can take tours during the day and at night. Maybe you will feel like you are being watched. Maybe you will catch something out of the corner of your eye. Or maybe you will just get a cold chill.

New Hope

This quaint little town along the Delaware River in Bucks County is surprisingly very haunted. It is supposedly one of the most haunted towns in all of America. Many buildings have had ghost sightings or strange happenings. Aaron Burr house which is now a bed and breakfast has had many sightings and even people who have claimed to have been touched by a sprite.

The Logan Inn kept many bodies in the basement during the Revolutionary War. Aaron Burr (who should be haunting his own house) and a soldier are said to walk the halls. Of course, the soldier is the more common sighting. Not a surprise when you consider the basement housed the bodies of the dead before they could be buried.

Take a walk around town or a nice relaxing drive down River Road. There is just something about driving up River Road from Morrisville at night that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Could it be you have a ghost riding shotgun? Or is just your mind playing a trick on you?

Pennhurst Asylum

Pennhurst Asylum opened back in 1908 and housed the mentally ill. Soon after it opened it became over crowded and people died from lack of care. This place is truly spooky. The second you walk around you get an uneasy feeling coming over you.

Guys watch out if you decide to take a ghost tour here. On the third floor there is a ghost who likes to lunge out but only at men. Ladies you might have to hold your guys hand while on the third floor.

Other things you can expect to see and hear are the sounds of whispers and footsteps. People have even claimed to have been touched by a spite from the beyond.

Philadelphia Zoo

The Philadelphia Zoo is the oldest zoo in America so there should be no surprise that it might be haunted by ghost of the past. It has been said that the Zoo was built on an old Native American burial ground. While this area was home to many Native American Tribes who knows if it was actually a burial ground.

Now the ghost that reportedly haunt the zoo are mainly located in the admin buildings. So being a guest you won’t get the chance of seeing any. However, do we know if animals can become ghost too? If so, check out the Primate house. A fire hit back in 95 and killed 23 of the primates including two families of gorillas.

Valley Forge

A battle never took place here instead General Washington and his troops camped out here in the winter of 1777-78. Many soldiers died from hardships of general life in those times. Some of those soldiers that died never left. They may have left their bodies but their spirits were left behind to haunted this historical location.

Phantom soldiers have been seen all across the encampment and surrounding areas. If you listen closely you might even hear the beat of a drum. Valley Forge is a great place to visit even if you are not on the hunt for ghost and supernatural happenings.

Philadelphia

You can’t be surprised when you hear about haunted locations in the City of Brotherly Love. It is one of the oldest municipalities in the US and was founded way back in 1682. Many locations throughout the city are said to be haunted by famous and not so famous ghost.

Maybe you will get your butt pinched by Ben Franklin over by his grave. Or visit Leah over at Washington Square who protects the grounds from body-snatchers. Paranormal voices have been heard and apparitions seen on the USS Olymipa on the Delaware River. This is also the ship that brought the body of the Unknown Soldier from France to the United States. So there has to be at least one ghost walking the decks.

If you are looking for the traitor Benedict Arnold. He can reportedly be found at Powel House in Philly. Now for the most strangest sighting you will ever hear. A Statue of William Penn apparently takes strolls of the grounds of the Philadelphia Hospital. Now I am thinking the nurses and patients were on some strong meds.

Pennsylvania has been home to many battles from the French and Indian War, American Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Many Americans died from those battles all across PA. It’s no wonder that Pennsylvania is home to many reports of ghost, cannon fire, drum beats, and gun fire.

Many Famous early Americas also called the state home. Since Pennsylvania is such a beautiful state it’s no wonder why they don’t want to leave. No matter where you find yourself in the Keystone State you will hear reports of ghostly sightings, mist or fog that shouldn’t be there and even a baby crying.

But do you go and seek them out? Or do you wait and hope you never have to witness anything? It is of course up to you. No what are you going to do.
