5 things photography can teach us about life

  1. Patience

To get the “perfect” shot, it takes a lot of patience. Unless you are one of those super lucky people you will have to wait a little bit to get the shot you are looking for. I took this shot a while back in the winter. I arrived about 45 minutes before sunset. I did get lucky with the color of the sky but I had to wait for that moment for it to come out just right.

2. Being prepared

You need to be prepared for all the things nature can throw at you when you are out taking photos. Like I said with the photo above it was winter. Now me being me forgot to bring gloves so my hands were a little cold. Make sure you check the weather forecast. If it is going to rain, bring an umbrella. If it’s going to be windy and chilly, bring gloves. There is no worse feeling than finding the right location and being too uncomfortable to get your shoot.

3. Beauty is everywhere

Once you start taking photos you really start to notice the beauty in the world around you. The cloudy blue sky, flowers in a garden, the way the buildings fill a sky like or the morning dew on a spiderweb.

4. Slow Down

You need to just slow down and take a deep breath. Look around you and try to figure out what will happen next. Instead of just snapping away at some urban location. Wait a second and make sure nothing is going to cross paths with you or better yet wait till that tour bus or bike rider comes into view. The image below I waited for the log flume to come into frame.

You have to wait for the right moment to press the button. I was just a hair to quick.

5. Just Do it

Just like the Nike saying. Just do it and go with your gut. It may not always be right but when it is you can come up for some spectacular images. While not the best I did manage to line the tigers eyes up between the fence.

I could have waited hours till his eyes lined up right between the fence. However, I just went with my gut and got the look I was looking for.

Bonus

Step outside your comfort zone.

I don’t know about you but for me I am not the biggest “people” person. I could really do without the crowds sometimes. But some of my best photos (in my opinion) are out among the crowds and crowds of people. Photography really got me outside of my comfort zone. It really holds true in the beginning of my journey.
